VINTAGE:
The 2019 growing season was a roller coaster that kept us on our toes, but resulted in beautiful wines. Spring precipitation persisted through bloom and berry set, but the weather had little impact on our yields. As summer progressed, our typical heat spikes failed to appear, allowing berry flavors to develop slowly, and leading to one of our longest harvests on record. We picked at optimal ripeness and are thrilled with our young wines.
WINEMAKING:
Our Sangiovese Riserva is selected from our finest barrels and only in outstanding vintages. A wine of great depth and concentration, it is true to both its Italian heritage and its Napa Valley terroir.
Made with 100% Brunellone clone, the grapes are hand-picked and gently sorted before destemming without crushing the berries. We adjust our cap management techniques—punchdowns and pumpovers—to get the desired structure and color without overextraction. The wine then gets extended barrel aging in French oak.
TASTING NOTES:
This deep crimson to black wine is layered and complex with notes of black cherry, dark plum, bay leaf, toasted oak, baker’s chocolate, and spices. This is a dense wine that will benefit from aerative decanting or time in the cellar. Fine-grained tannins provide structure and support but do not overwhelm. The finish seems endless and will reward contemplation.
FOOD PAIRING:
Pairing with cambozola with warm focaccia, pizza ai fungi, beef enchiladas, or red Thai curry.
