VINTAGE
The 2022 growing season was blessed by late winter rains that replenished our soil moisture as the vines emerged from dormancy. A cold spring led to a slower start for the vines, but we avoided any frost danger. Summer growing conditions were exceptional, with consistent weather and blue skies ushering in a Goldilocks summer that was not too hot and not too cold. We are thrilled with the quality of the grapes from the outstanding 2022 vintage.
WINEMAKING
The Sagrantino was hand-harvested and carefully destemmed into a small open-top fermentor. Throughout the 14-day maceration, the must was gently punched down to extract color and flavor. After fermentation, the wine was aged for 18 months in once-used French oak barrels, allowing it to develop structure and depth before bottling..
TASTING NOTES
The 2022 Sagrantino boasts vibrant aromas of dark berries, baking spices, black olives, and a hint of coriander. The wine is mouth-coating yet surprisingly more approachable than previous vintages, while still maintaining the potential for beautiful aging. On the palate, notes of earth, sandalwood, and ripe plum unfold, offering a complex and harmonious experience. The wine displays incredible symmetry, with firm tannins that will soften over time, making it enjoyable now or a great candidate for aging over the next decade or more.
PAIRINGS
This gem pairs perfectly with rich, slow-cooked dishes. Try it with a deeply flavored brisket, or for an Italian twist, pair it with fagioli all’uccelletto, a traditional Tuscan bean and sausage stew reminiscent of cassoulet. The wine's robust structure complements the richness of these hearty dishes, while its subtle spice notes enhance the savory flavors.
